Grant - Data Collection Opt-Out Form
October 2010 - Kenston
awarded $677,000 physical education grant
Kenston Local Schools were recently awarded the Carol M. White
Physical Education Program (PEP) grant of federal funds earmarked
for physical education programming for the district’s 3,200 K-12
students. The overall aim is to address the childhood and
adolescent obesity issue in our schools and improve overall health
in our community through increased physical activity, weight
management, stress reduction, nutrition education and programs that
stress the mind, body and spirit. Kenston is the only school in
Ohio to be awarded PEP funding this year.
The
grant provides $677,706 for professional development, development of
innovative activities that engage all students and promote lifetime
fitness and instruction in healthy eating habits and good
nutrition. The grant goal is to improve and increase alignment to
State Standards with the implementation of A New Approach to
Fitness and Wellness.
The
PEP grant will help the district acquire resources ranging from all
the equipment needed to implement A New Approach to Fitness and
Wellness including pedometers, heart rate monitors and fitness
equipment.
Since
2006 the district has established Health and Wellness as a goal. The
results have been to increase the offering of low-fat foods and
fresh fruits and vegetables in the schools cafeteria. This year,
the district added more days with only nutritional snacks and
fresh-from-the-farm produce. Being awarded the PEP grant adds
another dimension to improving the health and wellness of Kenston’s
students.
