On Wednesday, September 14, 2011, the Lady Bombers Varsity Tennis Team earned The Chagrin Valley Conference Title in a three way tie with Hawken and Chagrin Falls. The Conference tournament was hosted at the Kenston courts from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and included Kenston, Chagrin Falls, Hawken, Orange, and Beachwood High School.
Kenston's team has the best of both worlds this season - a team with experience and talented younger players. The Lady Bombers started off the season strong winning the Rock River Invitational. Coach Greg Aten describes the team, "Leading the team in first singles is junior Mandy Marchant, freshman Natasha Birze plays second singles, senior Shea Marks plays third singles, senior Keirstan Kure and sophomore Kathleen Swanson play first doubles, and sophomores Miranda Kyle and Kendall Althans play second doubles."
Coach Greg Aten stated, "We have depth all the way through our lineup and that gives us a shot at winning every match we are in. Marchant, a top ranked USTA player made two straight trips to the state tournament. Birze is also a top ranked USTA player, and Marks and Kure all bring talent and leadership to the team. Swanson, Kyle, and Althans add talent and dedication as well."
As a division one team, Kenston plays a schedual highlighted by some of the toughest teams in the area. It's only September 15, and the team has already played 13 matches, as they play anywhere from 3-5 matches a week. There is no time limit on tennis matches and some of the matches fun over 3 1/2 to 4 hours long. Senior co-captain, Shea Marks said, "It has been very difficult and challenging, but yet very rewarding especially when we pull out a win after already playing 4 matches that week! The team is very close and we have a lot of fun too!"
