Senior Alex Wittenberg pitched five innings before giving up a hit and drove in the game-winning run with a two-out single in the top of the 10th inning on Monday to lead Kenston to a 4-3 victory over James Robinson High of Fairfax, Va., in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Wittenberg struck out six and walked three in six innings in the season opener for the Bombers. Sophomore Mike Fearer pitched two innings before junior Patrick Porter finished the game to pick up the victory with two scoreless innings.
Wittenberg drove in junior Eric Monroe with the game-winning run. Monroe had led off the top of the 10th with his third hit, and moved to third before coming home on Wittenberg's hit.
Kenston’s first year coach Bob Ford said, "Our win today is a direct result of the hard work the players have put in during the off-season – and the focus on doing the small things right at game speed. I am really proud of how my team battled and fought to get a hard earned win in 10 innings over a very tough team."
